Sarracenia Pitcher Plant

Sarracenia, or the pitcher plant grows in swampy ground. They have adapted to the poor soil by modifying its leaves to form the pitchers that we all are familiar with. The hood of the pitcher can be closed when too much rain falls, and in doing so, a few animals have made it their homes, for example: ants, frogs and bats.  These animals in turn provide nutrition to the plant which means then the plant does not need to fill the pitcher with digestion fluid.

In addition to each stage of the leave's cycle I’ve also added the flowers that bloom on stems above the plant to protect the bee pollinators along with a butterfly and ants that are visiting.

I chose to plant mine in a hand made barrel with copper rings that can be touched to turn on the LED lights that are placed in each full pitcher to add a soft glow to the pitchers. The whole piece stands 25 inches high and is 12 inches around.
